NZSSOC Results: Great representation from our CMOC students!

The 2021 New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs were held 23 to 25 July in Hawke’s Bay. The weather was brilliant, with clear skies and crisp air, and our orienteers enjoyed the challenges of the Sprint at Splash Planet in Hastings and the Long and Relay at Awapai. Check out our Facebook page for photos from the Sprint, Long, and Relay. Many thanks to Hawke’s Bay Orienteering Club for welcoming and hosting our orienteers.

We’re very proud of the CMOC orienteers who took part in NZSSOC, especially those without a great deal of experience on the farmland terrain where the Long and Relay were held. As a club, we can celebrate some great successes! Results are online [SPRINT – Results and Split times, WinSplits Online (23/7/21); LONG – Results and Split times, WinSplits Online (24/7/21); RELAY – Results and Split times, WinSplits Online (25/7/21)], and here are some CMOC-relevant highlights from the results.

Club Training Day – 11 July

The club training day on 11 July was scheduled to be held at Waiuku Forest. Unfortunately the forest is unavailable and we are now looking to find another suitable venue. As soon as this can be confirmed members will be advised.

2021 Queen’s Birthday Weekend Orienteering in Christchurch

Nearly 30 members of the club travelled to Christchurch at Queen’s Birthday weekend for three days of orienteering. The events doubled as the selection trials for the NZ team to participate in the Australian Secondary School Championships in Tasmania in late September. The team is expected to be announced in a few weeks.

Below are the top three placings of club members:

Notably in the sprint event, the club had three members in the top five of the Junior Boys grade (Oscar Vink and Blake McKinnon were the other two).

Feedback from juniors who went to Christchurch suggests the terrain for the long and middle distance events was a challenge, being quite different to the sand dune terrain we have around Auckland.
